I don't think there's any question that if we had a patch adding the gossip feature I am positing,
vs this one, that the gossip one is the Right Approach to take.  The only problem is that
that is tricky code. :)

If you think about it that way, then I think it's clear that this patch is fine to use locally
as a kludge to achieve what you want but it's not something we want to support as part of
0.4 and beyond.
