The buildfile resides in the same directory as the top-level project  
definition.  E.g., if you have a buildfile

define "P" do
   # ...

   define "S1" do
     # ...

   define "S2" do
     # ...

The directory contents will include

$PROJ/buildfile # the buildfile above
$PROJ/src       # src for "P"
$PROJ/S1/src    # src for S1
$PROJ/S2/src    # src for S2
