I'm integrating some of your changes and also trying to clean up the code so
it's more obvious what goes on, and simplify wrapper.


I've been using Buildr+JRuby in my current project. The only issue I have is
> that it seems to be slower than running on MRI.


I think most of it is the start up time, the C version is definitely faster.
