Sorry for the stupidity, but I did not have the import.
My main problem that caused this oversight is that in Eclipse, the
.jpf file is apparently not recognized as java source so I do not get
editing features which are available when I'm editing java source,
like completions etc. that help when creating files.  Is there some
way around this ?

Yes, it definitely is something that should work.  Do you have the 
following import statement?

    import org.apache.beehive.controls.api.bean.Control;
