Subject [jira] [Commented] (BEAM-1134) Add support of String in MongoDBIO
Date Mon, 12 Dec 2016 20:04:58 GMT

Eugene Kirpichov commented on BEAM-1134:

I agree that wasting like 10 lines writing an anonymous class in Java 7 for every trivial
conversion (like "Document.toString()") is frustrating, and it would be good for users to
add some syntactic sugar.

However, I think there are much better ways of addressing this syntactic sugar than building
it into MongoDbIO and every other similar connector, for the reasons I outlined. I suggest
to continue this discussion on the thread about conversions on beam-dev. It's definitely a
very useful discussion to have. It probably makes sense to frame it as "What are the common
trivial use cases of ParDo's that should have been a one-liner but aren't, and how can we
make them be one-liners for users, via SDK changes and guidance for library developers".
