Subject [jira] [Commented] (BEAM-776) Use 'categories' better on the blog

James Malone commented on BEAM-776:
-----------------------------------

Good point. I propose a two-step solution here.

1. I can rename all of the categories in posts to blog to immediately clean things up
2. We can re-do how blog templating works so categories are useful (and not in the URL) and
also add support for tags. Something similar to this (http://www.minddust.com/post/alternative-tags-and-categories-on-github-pages/)

With #1 also will add redirects to prevent breaking links. WDYT?

> The enticingly named 'categories' field in the blog headers seems completely useless.
As far as I can tell, all it does it show up in the URL in wonky ways without giving search
capabilities or useful grouping. We should figure out if there's something better to do here.
> Example url wonkiness caused by seemingly relevant categories:
> http://.../beam/release/2016/06/15/first-release.html
> http://.../beam/python/sdk/2016/02/25/python-sdk-now-public.html
> For now, I suggest all new blogs just use the category 'blog'.
