Another problem is that a server shutdown seems to not stop those batches properly? Didn't
look at those code parts in detail, but just a gut feeling...

Imo we should try to stop all the running batches if the whole server gets shut down. 
Probably try to wait for some specified amount of time (60 seeconds? configurable?) and then
kill them?
