+1 to Steve as release manager and being ruthless for 1.2.

Subject: Re: Questions on moving to Axis 1.2

Speaking as an individual (and not as the Axis dev team), I am against
*any* changes going into the Axis1.1 codebase at this time. (at the -0
to -0.5 level; not prepared to veto them, but very unhappy about their
presence).

Every change has consequences, and the only way to find out what they
are is to do a full RC cycle. We need to stop last minute changes that
arent related to regressions (something that worked on 1.0 breaks on
1.1). Lots of people want to put their fixes into the 1.1 release, but
we need to hold back or nothing will ever get out the door.

As soon as 1.1 goes gold the source repository opens up again and plenty
many changes can go through. scalability and performance are things that
need looking at -and the system needs to be aggressively tested on a
multi-cpu system to make sure that nothing breaks.

Other people can disagree, it is always a tough line deciding what goes
in and what doesnt. We got burned in Axis1.0 with a last minute change
(hence the need for servlet.jar in the client on java1.4), and the
reasonably slow release cycle for axis1.1 has actually let the system
get reasonably stable.

It's also created pent up demand for extra things to go into the system.
Next time we should explicitly branch CVS and be very ruthless about
changes. Maybe I'll nominate myself release manager, so you can really
see intransigence.

could get into official 1.1 release? We're supposed to ship our product in June and I'd rather
not ship our product with a self-patched version of axis.
