You could host a group on groups.yahoo.com - its free. It works the same way
as the the mail list, plus you get the added benefit of having the
psuedo-discussion group type function on the website. You can browse, search
and post from the website, or by using email the same as a mail list.

Seems like this would be a good compromise for everyone..?? :-)
