Subject RE: Out of Office messages
Date Mon, 07 Jul 2008 15:58:14 GMT
In fairness to those (like myself) who set these messages, there is an expectation that email
is 'near-realtime' these days, and if someone sends a message and is expecting a response,
then it is polite (in the US at least) to set those expectations much lower when you are on
vacation.

We can complain all we want about mail systems that (incorrectly) send these vacation responses
to mailing lists, but often those in the business world are stuck using the tools we have
at our disposal, and sometimes those tools are lame. Sometimes they aren't. For instance,
my employer (Adobe) just upgraded me to Exchange 2007, which allows me to set an OOO message
for internal and external mail differently (or not at all for external). I think this is
very cool.
