You could also use EJB3, which is mostly a thin wrapper around hibernate 
with an API that apache can't host in Maven. It is java5 only, but lets 
you use annotations to describe your binding.

Having tried both EJB3 and hibernate 3.1 last week, I go with 
hibernate+java5 annotations.
