"portable C++" ?  Is there such a thing?  Having spend the better part of 5 years working
on a C++ project that embraced templates and the STL, I don't know if such a thing exists.

ahh tom, that's just a fear of C++ you have there. Just be glad its 
modern portable C++ and not, say, ATL macro ugliness
