things are better now, at least for server side code.

-There are only two platforms to care about: Windows and unix, the 
latter now covering the mac

-you can use unicode broadly

-ISO std C++ is broadly supported; std::exception can be used for 
exceptions, std::wstring for strings.

Its only where you talk to the OS or the UI that you go non portable.
