Chris,

setType has been removed from MessageElement.java. the xsi type information is
gleaned from the actual object that needs to be serialized. That's why
xsi:type="xsd:string" was being generated for the child. If you had used

MessageElement me2 = new MessageElement ("http://www.wolfram.com", "Child", new
Integer("1"));

you would see xsd:int instead of xsd:string.
