I can't replicate this error on the current codebase.  The execution of 
call.invoke() does NOT return a response object, but throws an exception of 
type java.rmi.RemoteException. After all, no valid return value is present so 
neither is there a response object. 

The exception can be caught in the Caller of the stub method.

In my test case, i did not get a NPE because the exception was thrown out of 
the method at the invoke call.
