Is the first unnecessary because of the implementation of saxFactory, or
because the spec was changed to mandate that it be thread-safe?

The first change "synchronized (saxFactory) {"... is entirely
unnecessary and adds overhead.  The other two changes address the
DOM-related problem adequately.
