Hey, it worked for me :-) (at least it did last summer when I was active in Axis development!) The hardest step is really #3 -- picking what you want to work on. How exactly do you want to make Axis better? Once you know that, the rest is simply about going ahead and doing the work, and sending it to the list. You don't need anyone's permission :-) If you don't know what to work on, you could ask -- but "How do I participate in Axis development?" and "What is something that I, an Axis newbie, could possibly help with?" are two different questions.
