Turned out the Transport_http path in $AXISCPP_DEPLOY/etc/axiscpp.conf was incorrect.

Hi Tobias,
    I got couple of problems due to these settings earlier, and managed to fix by setting the env
variables for root user.
    One other possible problem would be that expat libs not being included in the LD_LIBRARY_PATH.
However, looks like you have them on your path.
    You also got to run 'chmod -R 777 $AXISCPP_DEPLOY'.
    At the moment, I cannot figure out any more possible causes for the problem.
