[~rdblue] I agree with you about the performance of JSON encoding and we (at Zendesk) are
using Avro/binary encoding in production. 

We are thinking of using JSON encoding mainly for debugging purpose. It will come in handy
with tools, such as curl, when debugging microservices. It will also let us use existing gems
such as Pact (https://github.com/realestate-com-au/pact), which do not support Avro/binary
