This looks like a good addition. I made a couple of comments on the pull request. Since it
modifies the datum readers and writers, it would be a good idea to run Perf to see the impact
of this change. It might be possible to optimize the case where no conversions are in use,
to avoid calling getConversionFor(), should it be needed.
