The context I borrowed the term from was the arts community, in which it
describes being part of an innovative group, generally with the notion of
invention or the application of new techniques (e.g. laurie anderson in the
performance arts community).  Code is art, after all.

Certainly, the founders of Avalon and IOC were innovators and pioneers, so
my use of the term to describe the merlin-gang wasn't meant to imply that.
It's like the ocean, right?  Someday there will be another wave of the
avant-garde and I'll be part of the old guard, unless I end up in the
incubator ;)
