Cheers.  Thanks to all of you for suggestions and interest.  I'm going
to spend the next couple of days looking at existing solutions that can
be retailored for JAAS compliance and Avalon containment.  As soon as I
get a better feel for afinal solution I'll post it on an external site
for review and comments.  Again, thanks for all the help, folks.
