The ECM was actually modified several months ago so that you can use non Component "components" with the ECM. Take a look at the ExcaliburComponentManagerCreator class, which makes it very easy to use. Simply call getServiceManager rather than getComponentManager and you are ready to go. The goal is definitely to move away from the ECM, but it is still a powerful, stable, released container. While newer projects have been using Fortress, I am still using the ECM for several projects.
