Thanks for good advice and input everyone!

While we were talking, Pinterest open sourced their workflow engine:
http://engineering.pinterest.com/post/113376157699/open-sourcing-pinball.
It looks similar to Luigi in terms of architecture.

My current plan is to use Aurora in the manner described in the
example for the near future, with some sugar wrappers to simplify
common scenarios.

When the need arises, if nothing else has turned up, I think that it
would be straightforward to create a simple framework that runs an
service in Aurora, which in turn monitors e.g. HDFS and kicks off
aurora jobs when inputs are available, but output is missing. I could
probably make it convenient for users by extending the Aurora DSL in
order to keep all job specification information close. I'll let you
know if I get around to it.
