What operating system are you using?  Try this at a command prompt and
see what directory it tries to change into:
$ cd ~tomcat55

This might also work.  The next-to-last colon delimited section should
be the home directory.
$ cat /etc/passwd | grep tomcat55

Again, did you stop Archiva before copying that file into place?  I
doubt Archiva will read the file if it's already running.
