Two requests: 

1) could you send a backtrace (bt) taken after the segfault and
2) try this on a copy of Apache compiled with debug symbols:

CFLAGS="-DDEBUG -O0"; export CFLAGS
./configure --prefix=/somewhere (...) --enable-maintainer-mode (...)
make
make install

You don't seem to get far enough for Apache to fork() its child processes, but if you want
to prevent forking you can tell gdb to 

run -X
