Several people interested, several different APIs discussed...  please
indicate your preferences

1. API provides two returned values: a) an array of valid type
strings, NULL terminated; b) name of default dbm type

2. API takes as input a delimiter string and provides two returned
values: a) a string of concatenated valid type strings using the
specified delimiter; b) name of default dbm type

3. (something else)
