There could be a user-specified notation to append ("*", " (same as
default)", or even ""), but that may be too funky.  Alternative:
Return two strings instead of one to keep the interface simpler.

string1 has a list of valid type strings (including "default"), using
specified delimiter.
string2 specifies the name of the default.
