On Linux kernels IPv6 support is often built as a loadable kernel module
"ipv6" - if you don't have this kernel module loaded at run-time,
socket(AF_INET6, ...) will return an error.

(I didn't find another platform which could "support" but not "enable"
IPv6 in this way last time I looked at this)
