There's a chicken-and-egg problem.  How can you compile against
the library without knowing the right compile arguments?  I don't 
believe that APRVARS is any sort of solution.  For example, to link 
on Linux with threads, you must have -pthread.  If you don't have
that, you can't link.  -- justin
