Mandrake is rpm-based:

$ rpm -q make bash

I think the make version might actually be the most important part.

Yah... I saw that code in Apache and decided to simplify...  Oops. :-)

Like I said: we should keep it, but "why?" (and I'll comment the code with
the reason...)
