In addition to Rüdiger's question: the stack looks like it is crashing in
mod_jk. Do you have mod_jk in your configuration?

There is no known reason for a crash in the most recent mod_jk version 1.2.28,
but there were crashes possible in older versions.

Please also update mod_jk when doing another test with more recent versions.

2.2.6 is fairly old. Does this also happen with 2.2.14?

Note that due to a data loss on 26/27 Nov 2009 the issue that was originally
created as bug 48298 was lost. It has been re-created as bug 48309.

The patch file for apr-1.3.5/network_io/sockets.c

Problem description:
The issue occurred when I used Apache HTTP server 2.2.11 and apr1.3.5 under PPC
platform. The Apache HTTP server couldn't respond the HEAD message under
following environment:
1. Apache HTTP server is configured with multiple ports.
2. When compiling APR, with APR_O_NONBLOCK_INHERITED enabled.
3. Apache HTTP server is running on PPC platform.

Root Cause:
After investigation, I found that there is a small bug when accepting a new
conneciton.
In function apr_socket_accept of file apr-1.3.5/network_io/sockets.c, if the
new socket finds its father socket is in non-blocking mode, it calls
apr_set_option to change the non-blocking mode. However, the function
apr_set_option only changes the value in struct apr_socket_t, and the real
non-blocking mode of the socket has not been modified. So I think we'd better
call function apr_socket_opt_set to set the real non-blocking mode of the new
socket.

Please see attached for the patched file.

Thanks,
Tony

I can't reproduce it anymore. Even that I was able to see the problem
consistently back then, it does not happen now. I'm using the same virtual
machine as before. After closer inspection I can see that gcc was crashing a
lot when I was seeing the issues.

I'm sorry for the noise, it seems to be issue on my side.

Please close the bug.

Thank you

Looks like you've found a simple bug, that parameter should be the "secure"
argument to apr_ldap_init. I guess your report has been ignored because noone
really supports LDAP toolkits other than OpenLDAP, but now I've seen it I'll
fix this in trunk as soon as svn comes back.

Belated thanks for the report and diagnosis.

--- Comment #3 from Vladimir.Marek@Sun.COM 2009-11-03 09:00:08 UTC ---
Hi,

thank you for very quick response. In the mean time I found out that using
SunCC instead of gcc works. I can attach SunCC's config.log if it is of any
help.

My uname -a is:

$ uname -a
SunOS unknown 5.11 snv_126 i86pc i386 i86pc Solaris

Using /bin/bash instead of /bin/sh at the top of srclib/apr/configure also
makes the compilation work. But I haven't found yet why exactly.

I'll try to investigate more.

> #define HAVE_FCNTL_H 1

Given this combination, it would appear to be a shell script (configure) issue.

What is the output of "uname -a"?

If you can try it Vlad, does the problem go away if you edit the first line of
srclib/apr/configure to reference bash instead of /bin/sh?

I've just built successfully on opensolaris/x86 using your commandline.

Poking in a bit more detail, I see mutex_fcntl_methods is defined at line 623
in locks/unix/proc_mutex.c, within "#if APR_HAS_FCNTL_SERIALIZE". Line 834 is
within "#if APR_USE_FCNTL_SERIALIZE"!

Digging further, the problem appears to be evident in your config.log:
fcntlser='1'
hasfcntlser='0'
(mine, by contrast, set both to 1).

As a workaround, take a look in apr.h, find some APR_HAS_foo_SERIALIZE that's
set to 1, and set the corresponding APR_USE_foo_SERIALIZE.

P.S
I run it with the CLI -X (single process) option,
I use the 'SIGNAL_PARENT_SHUTDOWN' signal (e.g.
"ap_signal_parent(SIGNAL_PARENT_SHUTDOWN)") for terminate this (httpd) server.

--- Comment #6 from Eric Covener <covener@gmail.com> 2009-10-31 07:08:51 UTC ---
(In reply to comment #5)
> Now the patch makes perfect sense :-).

While it's already the behavior for Novell, I really don't like the behavior of
this block of code. The comment talks about reasonable defaults, but this
method should only be called if you're looking to change them anyway and you've
passed in an explicit number of hops.

Meanwhile, LDAP_OPT_REHOPLIMIT isn't even ldap_get_option()'able in openldap.
I am fixing HTTPD to not make this APR call if the user hasn't explicitly asked
for a change from the SDK defaults.

Interested in comments from others, but I do not think it's wise to no-op this
call if we can't honor the specific value passed in.

        ReportedBy: ishay.lavi@audiocodes.com

I use:
------
HTTPD version: httpd-2.2.13-win32-src
Platform: Windows, build with VC2005

I build my application vs. libhttpd (Apache) library (for adding HTTP server
abilities), during application running it required to shutting down and then
(after some time) to start this (HTTP) server again.
The procedure I used to initialize/shutting down this server is same as used in
the Apache httpd project “main.c” file with one difference, I set back the
'apr_app_init_complete' (defined at 'start.c' file) global variable (again
'erasing global variables' issue) to zero (cause server to read again the CLI
'argc'/'argv' argument).

The problem occur in the 2nd running, exception occur.
I debug it and I see that this issue caused by global (static) variables that
initialized and doesn’t erased after 1st server running.

Specifically I saw it for the ‘hooks’ ( “static struct { members } _hooks;”)
global variable that defined at the ‘apr_hooks.h’ file, for the 1st running
it’s fields set to ‘NULL’ value, but at 2nd it keep illegal addresses from the
1st running.

> A little background:

Thanks for that part!

> Manwhile, I found a better solution besides disabling Event Ports which I've
> committed. This is it:
>
> http://svn.apache.org/viewvc/apr/apr/branches/1.3.x/poll/unix/port.c?r1=807269&r2=829803

Works! Seems we're on track now. However...

> >However, I cannot reproduce your useport example on any of the machines I use
> >to trigger the buggy behavior here. Can you prove it returns correct values
> >when trussed? If no, that should be a completely different issue - if yes, it
> >might be related, though.
>
> You get "rc 0 nget 0" displayed on a machine with the problem? Ouch.

... yes. That is still the case. But as the fix you committed works, there must
be some strange condition sometimes making port_getn return those negative
values aside from -1.

Had no time to play around with dtrace, yet. But it seems quite obvious it
would show port_getn returning a strange value as does your example (though not
reproducible here).

--- Comment #15 from Jeff Trawick <trawick@apache.org> 2009-10-26 10:39:51 UTC ---
>First off: Compiling with ac_cv_func_port_create=no makes everything run fine,
>it seems. That is a strong hint that the problem is located somewhere in the
>near the port interface, either implementation or usage.

>Is the port thing restricted to solaris? Is it worth investigating more? Is it
>an option to globally disable ports for everyone?

A little background:

apr_pollset_poll() is what APR provides to apps like httpd, and that works
cross-platform. The "Event Port" stuff applies only to Solaris. If Event
Ports were disabled, it wouldn't affect other platforms and it wouldn't affect
all applications on Solaris since plain poll() would be used.

Manwhile, I found a better solution besides disabling Event Ports which I've
committed. This is it:

http://svn.apache.org/viewvc/apr/apr/branches/1.3.x/poll/unix/port.c?r1=807269&r2=829803

Ouch.

Yes, truss or dbx makes that simple testcase run clean for me on Solaris
10/x86-32.

$ ./useport-32
rc -17349963 nget 0
$ truss ./useport-32 2>&1 | tail -5
brk(0x08062908) = 0
fstat64(1, 0x08046FA0) = 0
rc 0 nget 0
write(1, " r c 0 n g e t 0\n", 12) = 12
_exit(0)
$

similarities with your observations

a. got worse with APR 1.3.9

The huge negative retcode from port_getn() wouldn't cause a problem with APR
1.3.8, since 1.3.8 checked specifically for "rc == -1" instead of "rc < 0".

(The "got worse" idea assumes you had a different problem with 1.3.8, possibly
the one that 1.3.9 corrected, which was very intermittent.)

b. problem doesn't occur under observation via truss

c. unexpected EAGAIN failure

apr_pollset_poll() would grab whatever was in errno when it thought port_getn()
failed on these cases where port_getn() didn't really fail and didn't set
errno. Since we're doing I/O with the CGI and recently did I/O with the client
, EAGAIN is a likely errno value to pick up incorrectly.

d. a case where port_getn() returns bogus negative number matches
cgi_bucket_read()'s usage

a case with the bad retcode is when port_getn() is called with 0 timeout to
find out immediately if an event is ready (if an event is actually ready it
won't return a bad retcode)

that's the kind of call made when cgi_bucket_read() is called the first time by
content-length filter; only when cgi_bucket_read() returns EAGAIN does
content-length filter tell it to wait until data is available

--/--

I hope you're able to try the tiny patch pointed to above in in this comment in
place of earlier attempts.

configure:40851: gcc -c -g -O2 -pthread -DLINUX=2 -D_REENTRANT -D_GNU_SOURCE
-I/usr/include/mysql conftest.c >&5
In file included from conftest.c:18:
/usr/include/mysql/my_global.h:361:24: error: asm/atomic.h: No such file or
directory

The problem was that mysql was built against old linux headers and the solution
was to rebuild mysql. Now everything works although I don't understand why
1.3.4 worked anyway.

So it was my fault, sorry for that! Thx!

OK, you can try with the following:

--with-mysql

It should look in the right places for you. BTW, do you have mysql_config
script?

Also, could you attach config.log?
