I've seen your mail but couldn't find any hint in svn for the
behaviour you describe.  Then again, I don't find any hint we've ever
had a release called 1.6RC1 at all (beta1, yes, but there is no RC*
tag).

inheritRefs' behavior was always intended to be as it is now but it
may be true that it was broken under certain circumstances at one
point in time, I just can't remeber it.

True.  If it has been a bug, it is fixed by now.
