use killall, the one stop shop to kill a process by name.

java5 adds jps, to list java processes; jps -v is detailed and gives 
java main class

 > jps -v
2048 jedit.jar -Xms64M -Xmx192M -Dsun.java.launcher=SUN_STANDARD
29368 Jps -Dapplication.home=/usr/java/jrockit-1.6.0_02 -client 
-Dsun.java.launcher=SUN_STANDARD
3568 SmartSVN -Dsun.io.useCanonCaches=false -Xmx256m 
-Dsmartsvn.vm-xmx=256m -Dsun.java.launcher=SUN_STANDARD
7619 Main -client -Xms96m -Xmx800m -XXaggressive:opt 
-XXcompressedRefs=true -ea -Xbootclasspath/p:../lib/boot.jar 
-Dsun.java.launcher=SUN_STANDARD
