You need <typedef> only in two cases:

* you want to use your data type by name outside of any other task.

* you want to use your data type as a type that gets passed into one
  of the new add(Type) and addConfigured(Type) setter methods[1].
  For example if you want to use it as a custom condition or selector or
  filterreader.[2]
