In ant 1.6.1 there is a simple way to echo a pattern set:

  <patternset id="ps" includes="*.txt"/>
  <echo>${toString:ps}</echo>

However the code in :
        PropertyHelper#getPropertyHook
that does this has the comment
        // Experimental/Testing, will be removed
        if (name.startsWith("toString:")) {
