Check you have defined
$JAVA_HOME  - Points to your JDK home
$ANT_HOME   - Points to your Ant home

and you have nothing in your $CLASSPATH environment variable (messages like this usually comes
due to a mess up in your classpath)

After installing ant , try to invoke ant 1.6.1 I get the following error

java.lang.InstantiationException: org.apache.tools.ant.Main
        at java.lang.Class.newInstance0(Native Method)
        at java.lang.Class.newInstance(Class.java:232)
        at org.apache.tools.ant.launch.Launcher.run(Launcher.java:196)
        at org.apache.tools.ant.launch.Launcher.main(Launcher.java:56)
