Files on your disk store characters using a "character encoding", which encoding you use depends on your OS and maybe some other circomstances (like your loace settings). If you open a file in Java, Java assumes it will use your platform's default encoding - unless you tell it that you use a different encoding. This is what the attribute of the task (and a lot of other file reading tasks) gets used for. Possible values are the supported encodings of your Java VM, please consult your Java documentation.
