OK,  I can see that but I would need to have my non-xerces parser named 
xercesImpl.jar  It would be nicer to specify the XML parser from the 
command line.  Is this a comment that should be direct to the Ant 
Developers List?

The easiest way is to remove xercesImpl.jar from ANT_HOME/lib and put
your preferred parser in.
