The following will get the output of pwd into an Ant property (NOT an 
environment variable).

<project name="test" default="test">
  <target name="test">
    <exec executable="pwd" outputproperty="pwd.out"/>
    <echo message="Output of PWD is ${pwd.out}"/>
  </target>
</project>
