because you have to manually compute the dependencies, right?

What other scalability problem do you see?

If the problem comes down to maintaining the dependcy graph, it may be
possible to take code out of Gump (this part is implemented in Java
after all) and create an Ant task that produced the path you'd feed to
<subant>.

This is just thinking loud and trying to grasp what you are looking
for ATM.
