Do you have the command line version of cvs in the path?
If yes, have you logged in at least once using the command line so
that it creates your password file?

cvs works fairly well for us but it does seem to rely on the external
cvs.exe and you have to get it logged in at least once to your repository so
assuming you
have it (although looking now I'm not sure that applies to anonymous cvs

cvs -d login
will prompt for password and I think you can type most anything here.
Once thats done and the cvs.exe is in your path try running the ant task

Subject: ANT's CVS Task

I'm new to ANT and I am trying to use the ANT's CVS task to retrieve
some sources from a CVS server. I wrote a simple build.xml file but
after running it I get the folowing message:

Buildfile: build.xml

[cvs] Caught exception: CreateProcess: cvs - checkout ant error=2

Total time: 1 second

Can you tell my why I get this error from the CVS task?

And another question. Because the CVS task doesn't work, I tried to
use the APPLY Task to run an external CVS checkout tool, such as CVS
tortoise (cvs95.exe is the executable) but I wasn't able to do it.
Can you give me an idea?
