Right, but when that process croaks, how do I make it call another ant
process....

I am not sure whether ant or ant.bat gives a return value.
You can use the MailLogger (see doc
http://ant.apache.org/manual/listeners.html#MailLogger)

invoke ant like that :
ant -logger org.apache.tools.ant.listener.MailLogger
