I understand the difference and see the appropriate notes under the <jar>
task, thanks for the explination.

Here is the build snipplet:

<target name = "manifest" depends = "init" description = "Updates the
manifest file for the ejb without rebuilding the jar">
   <jar jarfile = "${ejb.ejbjar}" update = "true">
      <manifest file = "MANIFEST.MF">
         <attribute name = "Class-Path" value = "${manifest.classpath}"/>
	</manifest>
   </jar>
</target>

org.apache.tools.ant.taskdefs.Manifest is the nested <manifest> of
<jar>, not the <manifest> task.  The former doesn't support the file
attribute (and it may very well be that it just ignored it in 1.5.1),
the later requires the file attribute.

Do you have a build file snippet for us?
