See one of my later posts - i fixed it by including the {java.class.path} on
the junit classpath.

Hummm... Looks like the thread is unrelated to the issue of being able to
run <batchtest> off a JAR rather than the classes on disk... --DD

The same problem seems to have been reported before but without and real
resolution or explanation - the thread was titled "1.5 b2 and JUnit" and was
logged back in September.
