I'm not at the manual right now but I thought it said (and experience bore me out) that to
get the path element to be accessible by all targets you had to put it at the target level,
I.e. Outside of individual targets.  I did not experiment with it much because I thought the
manual was telling me I couldn't do it.

That's the part I don't understand. Setting a <path id="..."/> inside a
target is common, and the <path> can be refid'd by subsequent targets. I
don't understand when you're saying 'no one else can use it'. --DD
