Thanks.  I looked previously but just not far enough.  The issue was that
ant does not include any debugging information whereas the command-line
javac does.  Thanks again!

Some weeks (months) ago somebody else asked the same question (I don't 
remeber the answer, maybe diferent debug levels?), search it in the mailing 
list.
