Is there any way to use <replace> across lines

e.g. I have a bit of html which goes

<span style="font-weight: normal">text
</span>

I want to remove the [span] tags to read:

text

I can't use
<replace dir="..." value="" token="&lt;span style=&quot;font-weight:
normal&quot;&gt;">...</replace>
<replace dir="..." value="" token="&lt;/span&gt;">...</replace>

as this will remove other </span>s that are wanted

is there anyway to match the equiv of /n and/or /r so that I could do
something like:

<replace dir="..."
         value="text"
         token="&lt;span style=&quot;font-weight:
normal&quot;&gt;test/n&lt;/span&gt;">
...</replace>
