I've actually had problems with StuffIt opening and expanding a GNU TAR archive. One example
was when I downloaded the Xerces library. Some of the paths were quite long and while the
file system didn't have a problem, the Finder wouldn't display or allow StuffIt to create
the long paths but I could in Terminal. Thus when I tried to build the library I ran into
problems. Since then, I only use the command line to save myself some trouble.

Yes it does. I use it all the time. I sue tar on my Linux box, but on my Mac I use StuffIt.
