Subject RE: proposed: ant build contest
Date Wed, 03 Jul 2002 17:45:09 GMT

Lets redirect this thread to its original purpose -
to discuss how a build contest could be run for the enjoyment and
benefit of Ant users -

Thomas Zander originally was not much in favor of a contest, but thought
that users might find a 'number of reference-style build files' addressing
'Things that are quite hard to do' more useful.

I think he has a good point, but I think a contest would be an excellent way

of getting people to submit examples of 'Things that are quite hard to do'
and would result is several alternative 'reference-style build files'.
This contest could be classified as a 'stumper' contest (other names

Anyone have any good hard problems? Perhaps ones that you have found
answers to, but might make interesting meat for a discussion?

Another proposed contest would be a tour-de-force contest to demonstrate the

latest and greatest in Ant usage. In a sense, it would be like taking ideas
laid down in Steve's Ant book, and trying them out against a new problem,
recently developed tasks. In another sense, it would be sort of a hot-dog
to see just what other people have brought into their build environments.
I invite proposals for problems.

The above is not a full summary of what has thus far been discussed in the
thread -
David Colton made a very interesting suggestion - collecting complex
build files from OS projects, along with a commentary by their authors on
project challenges, etc.

So, if you have an idea for a challenge, lets here it!
